Unrealistic Requirements

2008年10月30日 Posted in: 隨心, 工作

Unless you are the biggest boss in office, you are somehow bounded by the rule of your boss or boss of the boss. Even if you are the biggest boss in office, you are still bounded by the company culture, rules from corporate governance, expectation of investors. No one have the real freedom in work place. So, don't use the boundage from boss as your way out. Successful people would not be successful if they could not handle the unrealistic requirements from bosses and get through the difficulties. Handling your boss and the unrealistic requests is part of your job duty. You won't be a member of the round table without getting through those hurdles.

Age Discrimination

Watch a news about age discrimination in the airlines of hong kong tonight. Somehow, airlines force local attendants to “retire” before 45 or 55, subject to the starting date of the contract. According to the spokeman of the airlines, revise of retirement age is a big issue to the companies as the arrangement would have impact to the promotion prospects.

The news does not bring me any surprise. Explanation from the spokeman is also found reasonable. If all the old guys keep stucking at the top levels, how can new comers getting into the management level? Also, if you are not as energetic as before, it is logical to leave the position and let someome else who is strong enought to take over your place. The whole picture is crystal clear to me. However, being a mid age man, I start understand why middle age lives are filling with uncertains. On one hand, you do not know how long you can keep being productive (I mean with 120% output daily). On the other hand, you do not know how long you can keep producing in the existing position. Can we keep productive with these kinds of uncertain in mind? I really don't know.

Resigning Guy

The Stock market has ups and downs, either do our lives. Still remember the colleague, namely “the guy”, in my ex-working place. One day the guy was called to the senior manager's office. After around half an hour talk, the guy was resigned. Before he left office, he had said goodbye to most members of our team, except me.  Of course I know why he had that kind of reaction at that time; I was not friendly to him - at least in his mind. I had never talked with him during his entire 5 days work in the company. Honestly, although I did not social with him, I could say I was the only one who had never made bad comments behind him. Nearly all team members, except me, did say something bad about the guy in front of the manager or me. (I was working there for more than n years. When you have friends in a company, you know all the hidden stories). I know I should say some good words for him. Got to appologize that I didn't. It turns out he thought I was bad to him. Too bad, he had made a wrong judgement. I am neutual in this case. Hope he could get into a newer working place with a more mature mind. Live is always interesting but working place is not.

Clinic Doctor

If you want your son to be your successor, then you have a good job. If you don’t, you have never had. Don’t pretend to be happy in the working environment.

Talking about a good job, I think of an interesting career - clinic doctors. They need to work sever days a week, 365 days per year. I do believe they can gain a lot during their career life. However, I wonder whether they would classify their job as a good ones. Would they encourage their children to be their successors to follow their foot path?

Barter Utility

If you do not work for money, you can work the way you like. Yet, 80% of us regular workers are working for the barter utility - money. We cannot affort the luxury to fight with it.

Three Little Pigs in the Office

2005年09月01日 Posted in: 隨心, 工作, 日記

Remember the times when I was small, my mom told me a story…….

Once upon a time, there were three pigs living beside the jungle. One day their mother had to go to the town to buy food. Before she left home, she told her pigs not to go into the jungle. Also, she requested each of her pigs to build up a house on his own. The first pig was lazy. Therefore he decided to build up his own house with straw which is light and easy to build. The second one chose branches as his raw material. The last pig, which suppose to be the most hard working one, chose brick as his raw material. He spent lots of time on his home. When the wolf came to looking for food … No need the talk about it anymore. The theme is that hard working is important. It saves your life.

Is hard working really that matter in reality? It seems that social skill is more important than hard working or the real talent. If you have good skill to cover up what you cannot do, you do not need to be talent to survive. Simply mimic what the others did or repeat what the others said during meetings. Also, if you don’t like to do it that way, you can show up your A class shoulder, people will be scared and run away from you. Will your boss bug you for being that passive. 95% not. They enjoy the comfortable environment more than you do. Who wants his office to be a place of battle. That is a good way to SURVIVE. That kind of situation can always be found in the working environments especially those big companies.
